Auckland Libraries mourns the passing of Margaret Mahy, a truly great New Zealand author who delighted and entertained generations of Kiwis with her magical tales.
A fun and enthusiastic storyteller, Mahy helped inspire in kids across the world a love of reading and being read to.
Mahy wrote more than 200 books and poems and won many prestigious children’s book awards, including the Carnegie Medal, which she won twice (for The Changeover and The Haunting). In 2006, she won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing.
Last year, she won the New Zealand Post Children's Book of the Year and Picture Book awards for The Moon & Farmer McPhee with Dunedin illustrator David Elliot.
