Births, deaths and marriages

Researchers at the library lock-in. Alternative information sources

New Zealand alternatives to a birth, death or marriage certificate.

If you don't have enough information to obtain a certificate, or don't wish the expense of the full certificate, you may be able to find the missing information from the following resources.

Indexes to New Zealand births, deaths and marriages

These are available on microfiche until 1990, in the Central Auckland Research Centre, with a computer based index for 1991-1997. This will at least confirm the name, and if a birth or death confirm the area of registration and possible months when registered.

New Zealand Index

This is an extensive card file available in the Central Auckland Research Centre. This includes biographical references and obituaries, along with details of the history of places and organisations mainly in the Auckland region.

Auckland Provincial History Index

This index is available on microfilm in the Central Auckland Research Centre. This includes biographical and historical references to the period before 1876.

Alexander Turnbull Library Biographical Index

This index has a New Zealand wide focus, more than 200,000 biographical entries. Primarily twentieth century, but substantial earlier content as well.

Hill's Index

This is mainly birth, death and marriage notices from:

  • Vol 1 “New Zealander” 1845-1866
  • Vol 2 Thames newspapers 1869-1909
  • Vol 3 “New Zealand herald” 1863-1880
  • Vol 4 “Daily Southern Cross” 1843-1876

Death Notices Index

This is an index of all Death Notices which have appeared in the New Zealand Herald from 1886-1945, compiled by the North Shore Group, NZSG. We have a complete run of the New Zealand Herald and copies of the notices can be ordered from the library.

There are also clipping books covering: October 1911-February 1946 (with gaps), September 1947-August 1969 (with gaps, not indexed but in date order), and 1971-1977 (arranged alphabetically by year, and includes Rolls of Honour, marriages, births, wedding anniversaries and indexes of maiden names of married women).

Death notices - Wellington newspapers

Use the Wellington Genealogy Index to search for death notices in Wellington newspapers from 1999 onwards. The index includes Wanganui (2001-present) and Taranaki (2003-present). You will need to register to search the database, but registration is free.

Cemetery records

Resources include the following:

Funeral directors records

Funeral directors records give similar information to a death certificate. Below is a small list of Auckland funeral directors and their contact details, but there are many more organisations out there. Contact the funeral director only when you have proof of which funeral director was involved such as from a death notice, and the date of death.
