Trevor Penman, photographer

Trevor Penman (1928- 1998) was a gifted and enthusiastic amateur photographer who chronicled life in Mangere and Papatoetoe during the 1950s and 1960s. Copies of many of his photographs are held by the Manukau Research Library and Papatoetoe Historical Society. A selection is also available on Footprints.

Trevor Penman was born in Mt Albert in 1928. After attending Mr Albert Grammar School, he trained as a pharmacist. He married Gladys Collis in 1952 and the young couple moved to Thomas Road, Mangere.

Trevor Penman worked in Smillie’s Pharmacy, St George Street Papatoetoe from 1953 to 1978, then in Pakuranga until his retirement in 1991.

Trevor bought his first camera in 1950 and soon became an active photographer of local scenes and activities. He usually developed his own photographs.

During construction of Auckland International Airport in the 1960s he was employed by the Ministry of Works to make a detailed record of progress. A number of his airport photographs were published in local newspapers and in construction and flight magazines. Trevor also undertook work for the Papatoetoe Borough Council.

He was a scoutleader for many years, a member of the Papatoetoe Volunteer Fire Brigade, and in later years a member of the Papatoetoe Historical Society.

Trevor Penman died on 1 November 1998. Prior to his death, he gave permission for Manukau Libraries to copy a number of his photographs. The majority of his prints were donated to the Papatoetoe Historical Society.

Trevor Penman took a number of striking and memorable shots. His photographs include a range of aerial scenes. They provide an invaluable record of life and the changing environment of Mangere and Papatoetoe during the 1950s and 1960s.
