Using newspaper eResources

Many of our heritage eResources including newspapers and indexes can be accessed from home through the Digital Library. This includes all the ‘Library created’ resources. Some eResources will need you to enter your library card’s barcode and library PIN details first. Here are the options:

External/home use requires a library card barcode and PINBritish Newspapers 1600-1900  
The British Newspapers 1600-1900 eResource is the most comprehensive digital archive of British historic newspapers, and includes the 17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers collection and the 19th Century British Library Newspapers collection.

Library created - no login requiredHeritage Images 
Over 100,000 photographic images from the Sir George Grey Special Collections at Central City Library, and from the Auckland Weekly News supplements. Basic searching is by keyword, latest additions (previous 60 days) or popular subjects. Advanced searching can be limited to maps only; colour or black and white; no copyright issues known. Some images may be available for purchase for a small fee.

Newspaper articles about New Zealand arts and music; also Auckland City suburban newspapers (1996 – present). Articles are held on microfilm, and may be emailed on request.

Library created - no login requiredNew Zealand Card Index            
National newspapers including the New Zealand Herald and Auckland Star and local newspapers (1950s – 1996) indexed by the Central Auckland Research Centre. Articles may be emailed on request.

External/home use requires a library card barcode and PINPressReader  
2,400 newspapers in 60 languages from New Zealand and over 100 other countries. Backfile kept for 60 days. Includes the New Zealand Herald; Sunday Star Times and most Auckland suburban newspapers.

Historical photographs and other images from 1870 onwards, relating to the South Auckland and North Waikato areas, including selected Courier images from 1963 to 2002. Images may be viewed by period, location or theme. Basic searching is by keyword/creator/date, or by creator (photographer/studio/artist).

Knowledge Basket - New Zealand Index includes over 1.88 million records which are available for searching over historical and current collections of indexed abstracts to business, scientific and news information.

Indexes and guides to community newspapers from West Auckland, Rodney and the North Shore. Divided into four parts: oral histories; newspapers; images and archives. Microfilm and print copies of these are held at Henderson, Takapuna and Whangaparaoa Libraries. Option to search by keyword or browse places, subjects or dates.

An online chronology of South Auckland history which includes extensive references to sources, including newspaper articles.

Library recommended websitesPapers Past        
National Library’s collection of digitised heritage newspapers from 1839-1945. Includes 8 Auckland newspapers: Albertland Gazette (1862-1864); Auckland Star (1870-1945); Daily Southern Cross (1843-1876); Kaipara and Waitemata Echo (1911-1921); New Zealand Herald (1863-1945); New Zealander (1845-1852); Observer (1880-1920); and Rodney and Otamatea Times/Waitemata and Kaipara Gazette (1901-1945). Browse by date, region or title. PDF format. Some national newspapers like the New Zealand Tablet also include Auckland news.
