You can find information about Auckland Libraries' interloans service below. If you already know how interloans work, just fill out an interloan request form and we'll get the process going for you.
What is an interloan?
Interloan is a co-operative arrangement that enables libraries to obtain books, periodical articles and other materials from one another.
Interloan is not a document supply, general enquires or research service.
The service is available to most members of Auckland Libraries; members under 18 should discuss it with their parents or guardian as charges do apply.

What can be interloaned?
- Periodical articles
- Conference proceedings
- Published government reports
- New Zealand and overseas standards
- Music scores
- New Zealand theses and dissertations.
In some circumstances, the following items may be available for request:
You can keep some interloans (e.g. copies of journal articles). Some can only be borrowed (e.g. most books, scores and CDs), but certain items must only be used in the library (e.g. theses, microfilm, fragile or rare items). Loan conditions are determined by the lending library.
How do I request an interloan?
Fill out an interloan request form and we’ll get the process going for you.
When requesting books, please provide as many details as possible, including:
- Author's name
- Date of publication (if known)
- Whether a particular edition is required.
When requesting periodical articles give as many of the following details as possible:
- Title of article
- Title of periodical
- Date of issue
- Issue number (if possible).
If you do not know the pagination, exact title or author, the subject of the article may be enough.
How long will the interloan take?
This varies. Items from NZ can take several days, but overseas items or items not immediately available will take longer.
If you need an item urgently, please specify the date it is required by on the request form. We will make every effort to supply the item within the time specified.
Items which are not available in New Zealand can sometimes be interloaned from overseas. See our fees and charges page for all interloan charges.
How do I pay?
Charges are loaded onto your library card and can be paid at the earliest opportunity at any of our libraries or by paying online by credit card.
Please be aware that owed charges over $10 on your library card will affect your ability to borrow, reserve or renew.
What happens when my interloan arrives?
We will contact you when your interloan arrives. Applicable charges are added to your library card.
Loan periods, renewals and overdue charges
This is determined by the lending library, but generally the loan period will be four weeks. The return date will be clearly marked on the interloan wrapper or slip.
