Kiki Smith : a gathering, 1980-2005 ~ Smith, Kiki
Widely considered to be one of the most engaging and fascinating artists of our time, Kiki Smith has, over the past 25 years, developed into a major figure in the world of 21st-century art. Her subject matter is as wide-ranging as the materials her work has encompassed. In the 1980s, with her earliest figural sculptures in plaster, glass, and wax, Smith developed an elaborate vocabulary around the forms and functions of the body and its metaphorical as well as physical relationship to society. By the early 1990s she began to engage with themes of a more religious and mythological nature. Her re-imaginings of biblical women as inhabitants of physical bodies--rather than as abstract bearers of doctrine--led her to make a series of sculptural works related to the figure of the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Lilith, and others. The artist has more recently considered fairy tales and folk narratives as well as nurturing a growing menagerie of work concerned with animals and the natural world. Smith has now earned a considerable reputation as a virtuoso printmaker and draftsperson, and as a re-inventor of the startling sculptural possibitilies present in materials ranging from paper and resin to bronze and porcelain. Organized by the Walker Art Center with the full collaboration of the artist, the exhibition Kiki Smith represents the artist¹s first full-scale touring museum retrospective in the United States. This accompanying exhibition catalogue is a comprensive volume that includes critical essays, an interview, a generous four-color plate section, a complete exhibition history and bibliography, and the first-ever comprehensive illustrated chronology of Smith¹s life and work.

The return of the Gods : neoclassical sculpture in Britain ~ Trusted, Marjorie
Exhibition of works produced by British artists or for British patrons between about 1760 to 1860. Wealthy and powerful patrons and collectors in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Britain peopled their houses with monumental marble figures made to astonish and captivate. Scuplted primarily for their appeal as virtuoso objects in their own right, they were also made for contemplation and display. They were inspired by the classical sculpture of ancient Greece and Rome, they aimed to rival the antique prototypes. Iconic works, such as Canova's Three Graces , a multitude of portrait busts and exquisite reliefs are all discussed here. In addition to works by Canova, sculptures by Thorvaldsen, Nollekens, Flaxman and other leading artists are described and illustrated, while a short introduction looks at the patterns of collecting and patronage in Rome and Britain, and the different ways in which these works of art were viewed and displayed.

Chiaroscuro woodcuts : Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) and his time ~ Bialler, Nancy Ann

Cubism & Australian art ~ Harding, Lesley
Traces the first manifestations of Cubism in Australian art in the 1920s, when artists studying overseas under leading cubist artists began to transform their art. By the 1940s, artists working within the canon of modernism referred to Cubism as part of their evolutionary process, and following World War II Cubism's reverberations were being felt as part of the abstraction movement. Cubism continues to have an influence on contemporary art by giving the geometric basis from which to seek an inner meaning beneath surface appearances, the exploration of the spiritual dimension of painting and a key to understanding modernism.

Christchurch : the transitional city. Pt. IV ~ Not Available
This book is a collection of 153 temporary and transitional projects that have occurred in Christchurch since September 2010. It illustrates a city dealing with the tragic loss of people, the massive changes to its urban fabric that is losing 80% of its central city buildings and over 4,000 residential houses, and the hopes, frustrations, and dreams that all this entails. The book profiles many types of projects including: acts of protest, improvised community constructions, artworks both legal and improvised, bars, cafes, temporary stadiums and shopping centres, and much much more. It is the first book to compile these important projects, and is an historically important document. It is also something of a how-to manual that will contribute to the intelligent and creative rediscovery of Christchurch City. --Publisher website.

Wenceslaus Hollar : Portrait of a traveller ~ Norman, Mathew
In a period of prolonged social and political upheaval, the itinerant Bohemian printmaker Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677) became one of the most significant artists of the 17th century. A quiet observer of life who took pleasure in the beauty of small and unremarked upon things, Hollar’s art is almost entirely free of the tensions that divided so many European societies in his time. Investigates Hollar's 1649 self-portrait print (after Johannes Meyssens) from the series 'Image de Divers Hommes d'Esprit Sublime'.

L'iconographie d'Antoine Van Dyck : catalogue raisonné ~ Mauquoy-Hendrickx, Marie

The weather, a building ~ Buchanan, Ruth
Libraries are generally perceived as storehouses, spaces of stable accumulation and containment. While the architecture may attempt to operate in this stable tone, the material contained within them is often far wilder. Histories, biographies, loose thoughts, detailed notations, bodies, and objects are all temporarily suspended, cataloged, and organized, creating relationships where perhaps previously there was none. An example of where the tension between what is contained in libraries and how it is contained emerges in a highly palpable way in the trajectory of the Staatsbibliothek Berlin. This new artist book by Ruth Buchanan charts three narratives associated with the life of this particular library. The anecdotes become both concrete examples and metaphors through which to interrogate the production, situating, and sharing of meaning. --Publisher website.

Contemporary African art since 1980 ~ Enwezor, Okwui
Contemporary African Art Since 1980 is the first major survey of the work of contemporary African artists from diverse situations, locations, and generations who work either in or outside of Africa, but whose practices engage and occupy the social and cultural complexities of the continent since the past 30 years. Its frame of analysis is absorbed with historical transitions: from the end of the postcolonial utopias of the sixties during the 1980s to the geopolitical, economic, technological, and cultural shifts incited by globalization. This book is both narrower in focus in the periods it reflects on, and specific in the ground it covers. It begins by addressing the tumultuous landscape of contemporary Africa, examining landmarks and narratives, exploring divergent systems of representation, and interrogating the ways artists have responded to change and have incorporated new aesthetic principles and artistic concepts, images and imaginaries to deal with such changes. Organized in chronological order, the book covers all major artistic mediums: painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, installation, drawing, collage. It also covers aesthetic forms and genres, from conceptual to formalist, abstract to figurative practices--Publisher description.

The liquid dossier : Nick Austin [kit]. ~ Austin, Nick
An exhibition showcasing works completed by Nick Austin during his 12 months as the recipient of the University of Otago’s 2012 Frances Hodgkins Fellowship. The Liquid Dossier brings together a disparate collection of paintings and sculptures and combinations thereof. The works in the exhibition are loosely bound to each other. The disjunctive space between the titles of Austin’s individual works and what is visible in them delays the inference of meaning and creates a distance that enables poetic qualities to develop. As a result the meaning of each work remains fluid giving viewers an opportunity to add ‘colour’ through their own interpretation. Simultaneously concrete and elusive his works trigger accidental associations and digressive, rather than fixed or predetermined meanings --www.eventfinder.co.nz website (viewed 05/04/2013)

Cryptomnesia : Kristy Gorman ~ Gorman, Kristy

Aesop's Kiwi fables : paintings Pt. 2 ~ Harris-Ching, Raymond
Aesop’s fables were first compiled into a set of books by ancient Greek orators. Since then the fables have been retold, reutilised and reimagined in modern culture, literature and in art by such prominent figures as Marc Chagall and Alexander Calder. After some 26 centuries of story-telling – the last six of which have had the added dimension of illustrations – artist Ray Ching has given the fable tradition an entirely new location and cast. Aesop’s fables have left their origins in Greece and ancient Europe and set off to the distant isles of New Zealand. Now, the anecdotes are told by the inhabitants of these islands – mostly birds, who are called to take the place of the more familiar players. --Publisher's description.

Discombobulated ~ Mitchell, Sam

Art of change : new directions from China ~ Not Available
Art of Change is the first catalogue to trace out a very particular seam of performative Chinese art from the late 1980s to the present, as manifested in the work of eight artists: Liang Shaoji, Wang Jianwei, Xu Zhen/MadeInCompany, Gu Dexin, Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, Chen Zhen and Yingmei Duan. Often working on a grand scale, they invite the audience to engage with overwhelming, theatrical, yet ephemeral experiences--works which transform over time, like Xu Zhen's Actions of Consciousness, in which concealed assistants make colorful sculptures, and toss them into the air from inside a sealed white cube. Published to coincide with a major exhibition at London's Hayward Gallery, this book explores the political, social and cultural conditions shaping contemporary Chinese sculpture. --Publisher description.

South of no north : Laurence Aberhart, William Eggleston, Noel McKenna ~ Barkley, Glenn
South of no North brings together three artists whose works are connected by an interest in the vernacular, a regional sense of place and a similar visual sensibility: photographers William Eggleston (USA) and Laurence Aberhart (NZ) and painter Noel McKenna (Australia). Eggleston is known as a pioneer of colour photography and the MCA will display several of his dye transfer prints that shook the photography world whilst inventing a whole photographic style called the Democratic Camera. Sharing a similar regional sense of place and visual sensibility to McKenna and Eggleston is the work of New Zealand photographer Laurence Aberhart. Noel McKenna first discovered Aberhart’s toned black and white photographs in the early 1990s. --Publisher description.

Sci fi ~ Darragh, Judy
Known for her bright and playful objects and installations that combine the stuff we use every day, Darragh’s new works incorporate symbols from 1960s and 70s sci-fi art such as glowing orbs, radiating beams of light and pixellated interference, to build her own vision of the universe. Painted on large digitally printed PVC movie posters these works blend Darragh’s low-fi techniques with computer generated images of the future populated by alien newlyweds and soldiers trapped in unknown battles. --Publisher description

Stars in the river : the prints of Jessie Traill ~ Traill, Jessie
Embracing the medium of etching in the early 1900s, Jessie Traill forged a radical path for printmaking in Australia through the duality of her vision. Depicting the beauty of the natural environment alongside dynamic images of industry, her lyrical response showed a profound understanding of the dilemma which requires nature to be sacrificed in order for the modern world to progress. From early views of Victoria rural scenes and Melbourne as the ‘Paris of the South’ through to her major series documenting the construction of the Sydney Harbour bridge, the prints of Jessie Traill combine her poetic sensitivity with an unerring eye for line and form. Traill’s prints are recognised as vital to the evolution of post-war Modernism, with her unique visual expression finding an ideal medium in the etching plate. --Publisher description.

He puna iti i te ao marama = A little spring in the world of light ~ Tate, Henare
How to reconcile the deeply held Christian beliefs of Maori with the indigenous world view that they have inherited and are in many cases rediscovering? This far-reaching work attempts to develop the foundations of an indigenous Maori theology. In Pa Henare Tate's opinion, the traditional Christian message has fallen short of speaking intimately and powerfully to Maori experience in Aotearoa. Maori are crying out for a form of Christianity that is 'theirs'. This book offers one response and contribution to this call by attempting to develop a theology that Maori can call 'ours'. --Back cover.

The blue coat ~ Smither, Elizabeth
A wind that only the widest gardens can hold. A lipstick stain on a poem. A bee released – with recourse to a letter from the Inland Revenue Department. A grey sky like a governess, a mother dressed by her two-year-old son, a flurry of leaves behind a tram. In The Blue Coat, Elizabeth Smither examines the quotidian and the quirky for resonance, for contemplation, for verve. Here ‘poetry has a place among other bodies’, but also in enclosed gardens, in Chinese restaurants, in margins and in memory – ‘sometimes open and hospitable, sometimes secret, behind dark hedges’. Whimsical and tender, this latest collection demonstrates Smither’s talent for illuminating the poetry in the everyday – an out-of-season daffodil, a chipped Limoges plate. She is a master of the unfolding poem, in lines that take you from a single image to the cusp of something larger. At times meditative, at times playful, even slightly subversive, this collection impresses with a surety of word, a deft touch and a polished harmony. --Publisher's information.

Black Angus : 150 years in New Zealand ~ Bryant, Geoff
Black Angus: 150 years in New Zealand commemorates the 150th anniversary of Angus beef in this country. Since the arrival of a mere handful of bulls and cows at Bluff in Southland in 1863, Angus has become the dominant breed of beef cattle, with stock numbers now in the tens of thousands. Author Geoff Bryant travelled throughout the country interviewing and photographing many of the people and places featured in the book, and also researching the early history and sourcing numerous archival images, many from private collections. He writes of the prime breeding stock that laid the foundations for the growth of Angus studs in New Zealand, as well as the importance of shows, national sales, beef expos, Angus youth programmes and the growing influence of on-farm auctions. Prominent too are the early stud breeders and their families, many still farming the same land, the auctioneers, and those who have been instrumental in guiding the breed into the twenty-first century with the shift of focus to commercial beef, the gate-to-plate concept and developing the Angus brand. The book is a broad-sweeping, wonderfully illustrated tribute to the breed and many of the people who have nurtured it through the years. --Bookdepository.co.uk.
