Picture book
A Kiwi classic book and CD set. Of course I had to start with this Kiwi classic which children probably know word for word already - but that will only help with word recognition on the page.

I still have a vivid memory of the Topp Twins on the steps of Aotea Centre which had just been evacuated due to a fire alarm on Storylines Family Day. They were belting "Do your ears hang low", the first of their song picture books to be published.

Probably most famous for his Wonky Donkey, Craig has written several other novelty songs that are available as picture books with the CD. Other Kiwi authors who have done the same include Bruce Potter and Anika Moa.
Audio CD
When looking for classics on audio check they are unabridged versions so that children can follow the words in their books. Others great classics include Winnie the Pooh, Paddington Bear and The Wind in the Willows.
Music CD
If you are old enough to remember the Sunday morning Junior Request session, then you will love sharing these stories with your children. Of course I am old enough to remember when it was Merv Smith with my favourite story Molly Whuppie!
There are several audio volumes of books by Roald Dahl available on audio and this is just the first. Many other current favourites are also available as audiobooks, such as David Walliams, Andy Griffiths and Bear Grylls.
I am a sucker for an animal story and this is one of my all time favourites. It is a bit of a sad one though. If you like this story you may also enjoy titles by Michael Morpurgo or Dick King-Smith.
A lot of our fantastic Kiwi childrens fiction is not available in audiobook format yet, but if you dig around you can find some gems like this 2012 audio of one of Margaret Mahy’s best. For more Kiwis check out Kate de Goldi and Stacy Gregg.
