Narrative mapping on Kotuku Peninsula

Chris McDowall shares the maps he made with mana whenua, park managers, scientists, trappers, ornithologists, and school children during his artist residency on Aotea / Great Barrier Island.

During October and November of 2020, Chris McDowall was the Auckland Council's Artist in Residence at the Glenfern Sanctuary on Aotea / Great Barrier Island. 

This talk will outline what happens when a cartographer spends an extended period in a single place, making maps with the people who live and work there. Chris will describe the narrative mapping process he used to create a series of large-format wall maps. The maps based on these "walking conversations" explore Kotuku Peninsula from topographic, linguistic, ecological and temporal perspectives. 

Chris will share these maps, the stories behind them, the insights they yield and the things they leave out. 

Speaker’s biography 

Chris McDowall trained as a geographer with a focus on cartography and human geography. He has worked variously as a cartographer, environmental scientist and manager at the University of Auckland, Landcare Research, the National Library of New Zealand and Figure.NZ. 

He is a co-creator of the award-winning book, We Are Here, An Atlas of Aotearoa.
