Auckland Libraries: Doctrine of Discovery

Captain Cook and the Doctrine of Discovery

Tuesday 19 November 6pm to 7.30pm Free

The concept of Europeans discovering lands long occupied by indigenous peoples is now under question. Where did the Doctrine of Discovery come from?

Painting of ships.
Why was Cook counted as discovering New Zealand? What was the context for Cook’s journeying into the Pacific? Dr Susan Healy and Dr Tim McCreanor talk about these questions and their historical implications. Mitzi Nairn of Tāmaki Treaty Workers will then lead a discussion on how we can move past this and on to relationships of real encounter. Brought to you by Tāmaki Treaty Workers.
