Auckland Libraries: Doctrine of Discovery

Cook and the Doctrine of Discovery

Wednesday 25 March 6pm to 7.30am Gold coin donation

Many of us were brought up learning that Captain Cook discovered New Zealand. This concept of Europeans discovering lands long occupied by indigenous peoples is now under question.

John Cleveley the Younger.
Where did the Doctrine of Discovery come from? Why was Cook counted as discovering New Zealand? What was the context for Cook’s journeying into the Pacific?

Dr Susan Healy and Dr Tim McCreanor will speak into these questions and their historical implications. Mitzi Nairn of Tāmaki Treaty Workers will then lead a general discussion on what is needed in practice to move beyond the discovery notion to relationships of real encounters.

Light refreshments served from 6pm, talk starts at 6.30pm
