Join the library for free

Free library memberships are available to all residents and ratepayers of Tāmaki Makaurau.

Join online to get started. You'll be able to access all our online resources and borrow from our eCollections right away.

Then visit any of our libraries with photo ID to pick up your library card and borrow our physical collections (books, DVDs, magazines and more)!

Collecting your library card

Visit any of our libraries with photo ID to get your free library card. Talk to our friendly staff at the front desk. View all library locations 

  • Joining online first makes the process faster, but you can also sign up in person when you visit a library.
  • Auckland Council Libraries memberships are open to all ages. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with photo ID to get a library card.
  • Photo ID can be a driver licence, passport, Kiwi Access (18+) card or RealMe verified identity.
  • If you are unable to visit a library, our team of librarians can help you sign up remotely and provide information about our access services. Contact us
