Auckland Libraries: Fun & games

Fun & games

Wednesday 11 December - Sunday 1 March Free

What games did your great-great-grandparents play? What are your favourite games to play today? Join in the fun at this celebration of tākarokaro, children’s play, in different times, places and cultures.

This is a free exhibition of games, books, photos, manuscripts, and more from the Sir George Grey Special Collections.

Read an instruction book for board games from 1786, see some nineteenth-century tin soldiers with a royal connection, learn about the hula hoop craze of the 1950s, compare Māori and Pākeha versions of mū tōrere (draughts), and try your hand at putting on a sock puppet show. Fun for anyone who loves to play games, young or old.

Come along with your whānau, learn about some old games and some new ones, dress up, and stay and play!
