Makerspaces are creative spaces in our libraries that feature fun and educational technology that everyone can enjoy.

Tinker with robotics, bring your fantasies to life with our 3D printers, get crafty with a sewing machine, design apps, make music and more!

  • ​Makerspace equipment is available on Mondays, 3pm - 5pm.

  • Equipment can be booked in advance, but booking is not required. Walk-ins are available.

  • All Makerspace equipment is available free of charge.

  • Raspberry Pi - Specialised computer that teaches programming skills


  • ​The 3D printer is available during regular opening hours, and we use a first-come, first-served system.

  • We charge $1 per metre of plastic PLA filament for 3D printing.

  • All other equipment is available free of charge, but only during scheduled workshops.

Central City Library

  • 3D design software - Blender, Cura, Tinkercad

  • Sewing equipment - Singer Heavy Duty 4411

  • Creative computers

  • 2D art and design software - Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus 

  • Music production software - Audacity, Linux Multimedia Studio

  • Coding and game development tools - Scratch, Unity, Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio Community, Arduino IDE

  •  Video editing and animation tools - Shotcut, DaVinci Resolve, DaVinci Fusion, Synfig

  • ​​Makerspace equipment needs to be booked at least two days in advance.

  • The 3D printers are $4 for in-person use and $6 for click-and-collect. 

  • Induction is provided for first time users.

New Lynn War Memorial Library
  • ​3D printer - Ultimaker 2+

  • ​​Sessions must be prebooked. Contact New Lynn War Memorial Library for details.

  • We charge 10 cents per gram of materials for the 3D printer.

Takaanini Community Hub

  • ​​Makerspace equipment is available any time during opening hours.

  • To book the 3D printer, email Takaanini Community Hub

  • The 3D printer is $4 for in-person use and $6 for click-and-collect.

  • The sewing machine does not need to be booked and is free.

  • We do not have the software to create your print job – please bring your ready-to-print job file with you.

Te Manawa (Westgate)

  • Two small AV studio spaces

  • ​Makerspace equipment must be booked in advance.

  • 3D designs can be printed on request by our librarians.

  • We charge $1 per lineal metre of material used for 3D printing.

Waiheke Library

  • Raspberry Pi - tiny, specialised computer that teaches programming skills

  • iPads

  • ​Drop-in sessions Sunday morning 10.30am - 12noon for kids aged 5-12 years and their whanau.

  • Use of the 3D printer outside of these sessions can be arranged with staff at the front desk. All ages are welcome.

  • We charge $1 per metre of plastic PLA filament for 3D printing.
