Sir George Grey Special Collections

1940s box camera. Photographs

The photograph collections at Sir George Grey Special Collections contain over 500,000 images of New Zealand from the 1840s to the present day.

There's a strong emphasis on Auckland in the collections. Highlights include historic surveys of Auckland buildings and architecture, social portraits, landscapes and cityscapes, advertising images, magazine and newspaper negatives and over 250 individual photo albums.

Negatives by photographers Henry Winkelmann, Clifton Firth and Herman John Schmidt form a prominent part of the collection. We also have negative collections from contemporary photographers such as Sue Gee, Trevor Winkworth, the Kim Studio, and Shanks Photo Services.

These items are held in the Sir George Grey Special Collections, on the second floor of Central City Library.

Heritage Images Online

Heritage Images Online contains over 40,000 digitised images from the photography collections. In addition, there are over 133,000 photographs digitised from the pages of the Auckland Weekly News photographic supplements, 1898-1943.

The images are keyword searchable from descriptions held within each record.

It is possible to purchase reproductions of images in the photography collection. Please use our online order form, or download order and permission forms within the database.

Selected images are also available for purchase from the Sir George Grey Special Collections at Central City Library.
