Auckland Council Libraries: Library collections

Library collections

Ngā Kohinga a te whare pukapuka

Collections across our libraries include books, language and accessible resources, music, DVDs, and resources for education and research. We also hold significant heritage collections.

Our book collection

We hold the largest collection of pukapuka in Aotearoa:

  • classics
  • new titles
  • bestsellers
  • special interest
  • niche titles.

We strive to accommodate the interests of our readers.

Resources in other languages

We are dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of the people in our community, stocking quality titles in the many community languages spoken by Aucklanders.

See our list of language collections.

Accessible resources

Our collections and services for customers with reading or access difficulties range from traditional large print books to excellent eBook and eAudioBook collections.

Music and DVDs

It’s not just about books - our broad music collection ranges from CDs to sheet music and resources offering an enormous range of world music online. The DVD library has everything from new release films and pakipūmeka to sports and instructional titles.

Learning at the library

Your local library is a centre of learning. You can do things like:

  • study the road code
  • learn a reo hōu
  • undertake a business course
  • find out what standards apply to a new business.

From New Zealand case law to maps of 19th century Auckland to parenting help – it’s all here.

Heritage and research

We have significant heritage collections, including the Grey Collection, which now forms a significant part of the Heritage Collections at the Central City Library.

Four research centres house comprehensive research collections with a focus on family history, whakapapa and local history resources. More than 100 online resources are available through our website for research, study or general interest.
