The cat in the hat

Dr Seuss

Anything Dr Seuss could kick off this list. From Yertle the Turtle and Gerald McBoing Boing, to Green Eggs and Ham with a dash of everything in between. You can’t go wrong with Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Are you my mother?

P. D. (Philip D.) Eastman

Another author from the Dr Seuss family, this is probably his best known (although my personal favourite was The Best Nest).

Goodnight moon

Margaret Wise Brown

One of the best bedtime books. Similar good feelings come from Guess how much I love you by Sam McBratney.

The story of Ferdinand

Munro Leaf

A classic tale about how everyone is different – and that’s okay. It’s also a story of families as is the classic Make Way for Ducklings (Robert McCloskey).

The complete adventures of Peter Rabbit

Beatrix Potter

Our list wouldn’t be complete without the tales of this cheeky rabbit and his friends. Other classic rabbits include The Velveteen Rabbit (Margery Williams) and Brer Rabbit (Joel Chandler Harris).

Strega Nona

Tomie DePaola

The story of a magic pasta pot from Italian folklore. If you enjoyed this try Caps for sale (Esphyr Slobodkina).

Ludwig Bemelmans

A childhood heroine for so many children. Other books about being brave include Corduroy (Dan Freeman) and Curious George (Margaret & H.A. Rey).

Where the wild things are

Maurice Sendak

The story of Max and his imagination is a classic in all senses of the word. Similarly, books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Eric Carle) are as fresh today as they were when first published.

A lion in the meadow

Margaret Mahy

And finally a Kiwi classic, again with imagination at its core. Other Kiwi classics include Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy (Lynley Dodd).
