Can't find what you need in the Auckland Libraries collection? We provide an interloan service that allows you to access material held in other libraries in New Zealand or overseas.
Submit an interloan request form, and we’ll get the process going for you. If the request is urgent, please include the deadline date.
We’ll make every effort to supply the item by the date you need it and will keep you updated on the progress of any urgent requests.
Unfortunately the ongoing impacts of the pandemic limit some aspects of the services, are subject to delays and have become costly at times. International and urgent services are particularly impacted. We'll supply what we can and advise you by email or telephone of other options if we can’t meet your requests.
About our interloan service
Most Auckland Libraries members can access our inter-library loan service.
We’re unable to process interloan requests for those with eMemberships. Members on under 18 library cards should discuss it with their parent/caregiver as charges do apply.
Items that can be interloaned
You can request the following materials through our interloan service:
- Books
- Articles
- Conference proceedings
- Published government reports
- Music scores
- Microfilms
- New Zealand theses and dissertations
- CDs and DVDs.
We will do our best to find what you need but can’t guarantee that we’ll be able to supply the item you requested. We will contact you by email or phone if we can’t source the item you have requested.
Information we need for your interloan request
When requesting books, please provide as much information as possible, including:
- Title and author's name
- Publisher and date of publication (if known)
- If you require a particular edition.
When requesting articles, please provide as much information as possible, including:
- Title of article and author
- Title of journal/magazine
- Date of issue and issue number (if possible).
Interloan prices and payment
The standard fee for a loan or copy from a New Zealand library is $10. However, charges can vary depending on what you need.
Visit our
fees and charges page for full details.
Before proceeding with urgent or international interloan requests, we will contact you with a quote.
The interloan charge will be added to your library account and can be paid by visiting any of our libraries or by paying online by credit card or by an Account2Account bank transfer.
We suggest paying this promptly because when there is $10 or more owed on your library account, this will affect your ability to borrow, reserve or renew libraries items.
Picking up or using your interloan item
We will let you know when your interloan item has arrived at the library you selected. If you requested an article or book chapter, in most cases, we will email it to you.
Some items can only be used in a library, including theses, microfilm, fragile or rare items. If this is the case, we will let you know.
Loan periods for interloan items
Loan periods are determined by the library that lends the item, but generally, loan periods are three weeks or more.
The return date will be clearly marked on the interloan bag.
Interloans can usually be renewed at least once, subject to recall by the lending library. The interloans team will contact you if the item can’t be renewed.
There is no charge for interloan renewals.
