is a 31-day nationwide celebration of homegrown talent and the diversity of our unique musical culture.

Music on the Mobile Library Bus

Wednesday 10 May and Wednesday 17 May
Central City Library's intrepid musician Marcus will be accompanying Phillip on his travels all day, providing musical entertainment to all visitors to the bus.

Avondale

Avondale Youth Symphonic Band Performance 
Sunday 7 May 2pm -3pm 
A concert band of more than thirty players performing music  from Family Guy, Mamma Mia, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Dr Who and more. 
 Hear thirty musicians from schools and university from all parts of Auckland.
Conductor Rod McLeay has lived in Avondale all his life and has led the Auckland Youth Symphonic Band for forty years.

 

Blockhouse Bay

Instrumental Excerpts 
Monday 1 May, 9am - 6pm  Are you a musician? Can you sing or play a musical instrument? Would you like to perform at Blockhouse Bay Library during NZ Music Month? Talk to us about taking part in Instrumental Excerpts! Conditions apply and registrations are required. 

Bay Radio at the Library 
Monday 1 May,  9am- 6pm 
Listen to local radio station Bay Radio in the library! Keep an ear out for 'voice drops' created by your library staff. With many thanks to Bay Radio and Unforgettable Music.     

Kapa Haka performance by Lynfield College students 
Thursday 4 May 11.30am - 12 noon 
Come and help us celebrate NZ Music Month! Listen to Lynfield College's Kapa Haka group perform waiata. Not to be missed!

Line dancing with members of Steppin' Six 
Tuesday 9 May,  3.30pm - 4pm
Come and watch a line dance performance by members of Steppin' Six - and have a go yourself! Steppin' Six is a Blockhouse Bay line dancing group that performs to raise money for their chosen charities, Alzheimers Auckland and The Life Education Trust.

Come join acclaimed singer/songwriter/graphic artist Edward Gains for a very special Library story time session. Edward will be reading his book "Edward and the Tree" as well as performing sing-alongs with his all-star family band.

Harriet Eyres, our very own Pukekohe librarian, plays the fiddle at Mt Roskill Library.  Fiddle is the nickname for violin.               

Three Kings Primary School Choir performs at the library

Mt Roskill

Guzheng recital by Joseph Ngui

Enjoy the melodious tones of the Chinese traditional instrument guzheng, strummed by Joseph Ngui for the listening pleasure of all.

Harriet Eyres plays the fiddle
Thursday 11 May, 3:30pm – 4pm
Harriet is a fiddle player who has found a way to combine the two loves of her life: music and travel.  Inspired by all kinds of music, she also composes her own songs and tunes. Although she mostly plays Irish music, Harry has made it her mission to incorporate the best parts of her favourite fiddling traditions into her style, including French Canadian and Old Time music

Mapura Studios presents Good Yep Yeah! 
Friday 12 May 4pm-4.30pm 
Mapura Studios is a creative space in Mt Albert that provides programmes and activities in visual arts practice, creative expression, dance /movement, and art therapy for people living with disability and diversity.  This is a debut live public performance by participants of Mapura’s Music & Creativity program featuring songs & sonic experiments under the title of Good Yep Yeah.

StarJam, The Central Dynamic Djembe Drummers & West Sensational Singers perform at Mt Roskill Library 
Saturday 20 May, 11.30am-12noon 
StarJam, the non-profit organisation, teaches singing, dancing and drumming to young people living with disabilities. The ‘Central Dynamic Djembe Drummers’ and ‘West Sensational Singers’ will perform at Mt Roskill Library. Come to enjoy their favourite music and add sparkle to your day.

 Come and hear this talented choir of young people perform a range of entertaining and inspiring songs celebrating New Zealand's unique musical flair. From Moana to Lorde to Brooke Fraser, there’s something for all to enjoy! The group of 30 singing stars, aged between 7 and 18, is led by professional musician, musical director and composer James Doy.

Claudia Gunn plays tunes from Little Wild Lullabies
Saturday 6 May, 11am - 12 noon
We are delighted to have Claudia Gunn come and play for us. Claudia is one third of electro-soul group Substax, and her debut children’s album, Little Wild Lullabies, released last year, was recently nominated for a Tui for Best Children’s Album. She has also won two APRA Children’s Song of the Year awards for her songs.

Caberet icon Radha Stead
Saturday 13 May, 1pm - 2pm
We are lucky enough to be joined by Radha Stead. Radha trained under Kiwi icon Dame Sister Mary Leo before moving onto the cabaret circuit. She’s also done time as Auntie Ruby with The Aunties Fringe Theatre Group and recently started a children’s theatre group called Angels and Cherubs on Waiheke.

The Royal Fortune perform Kiwi folk songs
Saturday 20 May, 11am - 12 noon
Saturday sees the welcome return of local folk group The Royal Fortune who will be playing a number of our country's best traditional folk songs and explaining the rich history behind the music. They play in bush band style and you can expect banjo, lagerphones, bones and saws with energetic delivery.

Performance by talented local teens
Saturday 27 May, 4.30pm - 7pm
In collaboration with the Waiheke Youth Council, sees a number of local teenage musicians performing in the library. This promises to be an exciting performance featuring a range of musical styles from these highly talented youngsters.
